Ajase and Oedipus

Abstract

Japanese analyst Kosawa Heisaku insisted on Ajase complex based on matricide and prenatal rancor, while Freud’s Oedipus complex was based on patricide and incest. I studied Ajatasatru story from the original text of the Buddhistic Sutra, and then I found out that Kosawa’s Ajase story is somewhat different and distorted from the original text. He seemed to be inforced to revise the story for his novel idea as matricide and prenatal rancor, but it was a kind of metaphysical attempt beyond the psychological boundary. I discussed Kosawa’s Ajase story in three aspects as follows : First, Kosawa revised the original text of the Buddhistic Sutra for his theoretical relevance. Second, Ajase theory based on Buddhistic karma and samsara dogma more resembles the 8th alaya-vinnana or Jungian archetype concepts. Third, Ajase story from the original text of the Sutra can be fully explained by Oedipus complex and object relation theory. For example, it seems to me that Ajase story can be more appropriately understood by Britton’s concept of triangular mental space. I think that for the theoretical expanding as universalization Ajase theory should be worked through the full discussion and testing within the same Eastern culture area prior to direct appeal to the Western scholars whom do not have an intimacy and detailed information about the Buddhistic Sutra. Without this academic filtering processes, Ajase theory cannot be fully accepted to the worldwide analysts as an concept with universal validity. Of course I don’t want it. In my point of view, Ajase complex is a newly revised version of Oedipus complex masquerading with orientalization, and then we need not a new complex, but a newly widened scope in psychoanalysis beyond the theoretical stereotypy and dogmatism.
